Types of Coverage
While you can buy a policy that simply covers your home, it's advisable to purchase expanded coverage that protects you from the various kinds of damages you can suffer in a hurricane.
Many homeowners carry a single policy that provides five different kinds of coverage. According to the state Department of Insurance:
- Dwelling coverage provides money for damage or destruction to your house and any unattached structures and buildings. That can include a detached garage or the storage shed where you keep your lawnmower and garden tools.
- Personal property coverage is useful to protect your personal items from theft, damage or destruction. This covers items in your house that might be destroyed in a hurricane, including furniture, kitchen appliances and your clothes.
- Liability insurance covers you when someone is injured on your property and brings a legal claim against you. You can buy up to $1 million of liability coverage, and your homeowner’s policy automatically provides $25,000.
- Medical payments cover the doctor and hospital bills of someone who is injured on your property, and may also cover some medical bills for injuries off the property. You typically have $500 in coverage but can purchase up to $5,000 in medical pay insurance.
- Loss of use covers your living expenses, such as rental property or hotel expenses, as well as food, if you must temporarily move while repairs are being made to your home after a hurricane or other storm.
