Hurricane Insurance Claims
On September 9, 2008, Hurricane Ike hit the coast of Texas. Ike was classified as a strong Category 2 hurricane with a Category 5-equivalent storm surge. The massive storm produced hurricane-force winds extending 120 miles from its center as it moved through the state causing widespread destruction.
President George W. Bush made federal help available for evacuations and declared a state of emergency in Texas. A mandatory evacuation was ordered for the entire island of Galveston and parts of Houston. Individuals living in single-family homes were ordered to evacuate to avoid certain death from drowning.
The storm caused an estimated $29.6 billion in damage to the Gulf Coast and killed 112 people in the U.S. It was the third costliest hurricane to ever make landfall in America. It led to the largest evacuation of Texans in the state’s history and resulted in the largest search-and-rescue operation in U.S. history.
Oil and gas prices increased dramatically across the country as Texas was forced to close many of its chemical plants and oil refineries in the days and weeks after the storm. The shortage of gasoline and high fuel prices created panic throughout the U.S.
Thousands of Texans were affected by Hurricane Ike and the damage it caused. Individual homeowners suffered the worst of that damage and were left with the burden of putting their homes and lives back together.
The Texas Windstorm Insurance Association (TWIA), a nonprofit association that provides wind coverage for Texans in coastal counties and parts of Harris County, estimated losses of $2.7 billion, shortly after the storm hit, in the six TWIA-eligible counties most affected by Hurricane Ike.
Some Texas homeowners are still recovering from the natural disaster that was Hurricane Ike -- and fighting with insurance companies over coverage issues.
