Teenage Statistics on Driving
More than one in three U.S. teen deaths is caused by motor vehicle crashes, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Statistics compiled by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety reveal that young drivers between the ages of 16 and 19 are four times more likely than other drivers to crash. Motorists among this group who are at a particularly high risk for motor vehicle accidents are males, teens who are driving with other teens as passengers, and teens who are driving within the first year of receiving a license.
Additionally, a survey completed by the insurance company Allstate identified cell phone use and speeding as behaviors shown to increase the likelihood of a teenage auto accident. Teenage drunk driving is also of particular concern. In 2008, one quarter of all 15 to 20-year-old drivers who suffered driving fatalities had a blood alcohol content of 0.08 or higher. The CDC reports that when teens drink in any amount, their risk of being in drunk driving accidents is higher than for older drivers.
