During the evening hours of April 20th, 2013, Sheriff's Deputy Chad Christian Key was directing traffic near Highway 82 and Sherman, TX when he was allegedly struck and killed by a drunk driver. The apparent drunk driver, 28-year-old Ricky Trent Stanley, fled the scene of the accident, but was later tracked down and arrested. According to the authorities ,Stanley not only had two previous DUI convictions from 2002 and 2004, but at the time of the accident, he was out on a $10,000 bond from an August 2012 arrest. New charges are expected to be filed against Stanley for intoxication manslaughter of a peace officer, failing to stop and render aid at the scene of an accident, driving on a suspended license, and unlawful weapon possession.
Accident statistics show that, despite nationwide drunk driving-related deaths being down 2.5% in 2011, an estimated 48% of all fatalities in the state of Texas were alcohol-related. In fact, more than 1,450 people lost their lives in Texas drunk driving accidents in 2011 and 1,235 of those fatalities were caused by individuals who had a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of .08 or more. Besides fatalities, drunk driving accidents are also capable of causing life-altering, extremely costly injuries and damages. One of the worst things about drunk driving accidents is that they are wholly preventable, had the drunk driver not gotten behind the wheel of the vehicle.
